About Southern Services & Equipment, Inc.:

Founded in 1996 by Marc and Cheryl Nunez, SSE began as a small miscellaneous metals contractor. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans and engulfed the entire facility in 4 feet of water. The founders used the insurance proceeds from their personal home to repair SSE’s facility. Twelve years later, the company has expanded their infrastructure several times to keep up with the increasing levels of employees, machinery and equipment. The second generation has moved into management roles and is positioning SSE as a leader in the structural steel fabrication and erection market. The Nunez’s daughter, Mindy Nunez Airhart, has taken the role of Director of Business Development, responsible for seeking and identifying new clients and opportunities, as well as marketing and social media; while her husband, Justin Airhart, has moved into the role of COO, overseeing SSE’s day-to-day operations.

In 2016, SSE installed a revolutionary CNC plasma cutting system to greatly increase productivity and decrease processing time. The PythonX Robotic Structural Fabrication System processes beams, channels, angles, steel tube and plate with a robotic arm and state-of-the-art 3D CAD software. “The PythonX system is an investment in the latest robotic technology to improve our products, but it is also an investment in our business and our community,” said Marc A. Nunez, founder and CEO of SSE. “We are now poised for even more growth, which will have a ripple effect in terms of jobs and spending in the metro New Orleans area.” SSE has been celebrated as one of the largest manufacturers in St. Bernard Parish, and is currently experiencing its largest growth to date. Some of the notable projects SSE has worked on in recent years are the new North Terminal for the Louis Armstrong International Airport, the RTA Rampart St./St. Claude Ave. Streetcar Expansion, the Iberville Redevelopment (Phases IV through VI), the new Wisner Bridge in Mid-City, the renovation of the Ponchartrain Hotel and the NOPSI Hotel, the Permanent Canal Closures & Pumps Structure for the US Army Corps of Engineers, the canopies at the Union Passenger Terminal, the Gibbs Center for Innovation and Design at St. Martin’s Episcopal School, and the Civil Rights Memorial Dome on S. Claiborne Ave.

SSE is a certified as a DBE in the Louisiana Unified Certification Program, and is a 2017 graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program.
